About ServiceToolBase - Real Reviews from Someone Who's Been There

Most contractor software reviews are useless.
Not because the writers are lazy — but because the incentive structure is broken. The sites that rank for “best HVAC software” are either written by people who have never run a service business, or they’re effectively vendor content: carefully worded to avoid saying anything negative about a product that might be paying an affiliate commission. You read four comparison articles, and the only thing you know for certain is that every single one of them recommends the same six tools.
That’s the problem ServiceToolBase is built to fix.
I’m Grant Reed. I started this site after spending years helping contractors evaluate and implement software — and watching too many of them get burned by a pricing page that hid the real number. When I went looking for honest reviews to point them to, I came up empty. What I found instead was a lot of articles that listed the same six tools, described each one’s features in language lifted directly from the vendor’s own website, and concluded with a recommendation based on nothing.
How We Actually Work
Every review on ServiceToolBase follows the same process.
We start with real user feedback. We dig through G2, Capterra, Google Play, the App Store, Reddit, and trade forums to find what contractors who use this software every day are actually saying. Complaints that show up repeatedly across independent reviewers are real problems — regardless of what the vendor says.
We dig into pricing honestly. That means the full picture: what’s locked behind higher tiers, what onboarding typically costs, and what a realistic first-year spend looks like for a small contracting business. Not the headline number on the pricing page.
We synthesize patterns, not features. Most review sites will tell you Jobber has automated follow-ups. We’ll tell you that if you’re on the Core plan, that feature is locked — and the upgrade costs $100 more per month. That’s the kind of thing that matters on the job site.
We call out real weaknesses. If users consistently report a clunky mobile app, thin reporting, or slow customer support, that’s in the review. A bad tool gets a critical review here, regardless of commission rates.
How We Make Money
ServiceToolBase earns affiliate commissions when you click through to a software product and sign up. That’s disclosed on every article and on our affiliate disclosure page.
The business model only works if the reviews are actually useful. If we recommend bad tools, you stop trusting the site, you stop clicking, and the whole thing falls apart. Our incentive is to be right — not to be promotional.
Who This Is For
This site is for the owner-operator running a 1-10 person crew who needs to make a software decision without sitting through six vendor demos — and without getting burned by a pricing page that hides the real number.
If you’ve used a tool we haven’t reviewed, or you think we got something wrong, say so. Contractors who’ve actually used this software are the only people whose opinion matters here. Use the contact page.
