How to Block Off World Cup Days in Housecall Pro Without Losing Jobs

How to Block Off World Cup Days in Housecall Pro Without Losing Jobs

The US Men’s National Team plays their first 2026 World Cup group stage match on a Friday afternoon in June.

If you are an HVAC owner, a plumber, or an electrician, you have two choices that day. You can turn your phone off and accept that you will lose $2,000 in emergency calls to your competitors. Or you can keep your phone on, stare at the screen during the match, and resent every customer who calls.

There is a third option.

You can set up Housecall Pro to act as a digital bouncer. It will tell customers you are booked, let them schedule themselves for Saturday morning, and protect your Friday afternoon without costing you a single job.

Here is exactly how smart contractors are setting up their Housecall Pro schedules for the World Cup.

The “Turn the Phone Off” Fallacy

Go to any contractor Facebook group, and you will see owners bragging about “just turning the phone off” when they want a break.

That is not a flex. That is a leak in your business.

When a homeowner has a burst pipe or a dead AC unit during a World Cup match, they do not leave a voicemail and wait for you to call back on Monday. They go down the Google Local Services list until someone answers.

If you turn your phone off, you do not just lose that one job. You lose the lifetime value of that customer.

The goal is not to be available 24/7. The goal is to make the customer feel taken care of, even when you are watching the game. Housecall Pro’s Online Booking and Events features are built exactly for this [1].

Step 1: Create the “World Cup Blackout” Event

You cannot just leave your schedule open and ignore the notifications. If a customer books a time slot online and you do not show up, your Google reviews will tank.

You need to explicitly block the time off using the Events feature [2]. This tells the Housecall Pro algorithm to remove those hours from your Online Booking availability.

How to do it:

  1. Go to your Schedule tab in Housecall Pro.
  2. Click the New button in the top navigation bar and select Event.
  3. Set the date and time for the match (e.g., Friday, June 12, 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM).
  4. Crucial Step: You must assign yourself and your on-call techs to this Event. If a tech is not assigned to the Event, Housecall Pro will still show them as available for online booking.
  5. Name it “World Cup Blackout” and click Save Event.

Now, if a customer goes to your website or Google Business Profile to book an emergency call, Friday afternoon will simply not exist as an option.

Step 2: Force the Saturday Morning Pivot

Blocking the time is only half the battle. You need to capture the lead by forcing them to book the next available slot.

If your Online Booking settings are too restrictive, the customer will bounce. You need to open up your Saturday morning specifically to catch the overflow from Friday afternoon.

How to do it:

  1. Go to the Marketing Center and select Online Booking [1].
  2. Under Add Your Availability, look at your Booking Preferences.
  3. Ensure you are set to Flexible Scheduling (allowing 30-minute increments) rather than specific start times. This gives the customer the illusion of more choices.
  4. Check your Earliest Availability setting. If it is set to “48 hours out,” change it to “Next Day” or “12 hours out.”

Most customers who have already found you, clicked your booking link, and started the process are not going to start over. They want the problem solved. Give them a Saturday slot and they will take it.

Step 3: The “Ghost Dispatcher” Auto-Reply

What about the people who bypass Online Booking and text your business number directly?

If you use Housecall Pro’s VoIP phone system or a connected tool like ServiceTitan, you can set up an auto-reply. But even if you are just using an iPhone, you need a text replacement shortcut ready to go.

When a text comes in during the match, do not ignore it. Send this exact script:

“Hey — we’re currently on a job site and fully booked for the rest of the afternoon. We have an emergency slot open tomorrow at 8 AM. Grab it before it fills up: [Insert Housecall Pro Online Booking Link]. See you Saturday.”

This script works because it uses social proof (“fully booked”) and scarcity (“before it fills up”) to drive them to your booking link. You send one text, put the phone back in your pocket, and let Housecall Pro handle the rest.

Test It Before Match Day

Do not assume the setup worked. Verify it.

Open an incognito browser window. Go to your Online Booking link. Try to book a job for Friday afternoon during the match window.

If that time slot does not appear, you are set. If it does, go back and check that all your techs — not just yourself — are assigned to the Event. Housecall Pro only removes availability for employees who are explicitly assigned to the block [2].

This takes two minutes. Do it before the tournament starts, not during.

The Consultant’s Verdict

Your business should serve your life, not the other way around.

If you cannot take four hours off to watch a World Cup match without your revenue taking a hit, you do not own a business. You own a job.

Housecall Pro has the tools to protect your time. You just have to turn them on.

Your 7-Day Action Plan:

  1. Look up the USMNT World Cup schedule today.
  2. Open Housecall Pro and create “Events” for those exact time blocks.
  3. Assign your entire field team to those Events.
  4. Test your Online Booking link to verify those hours are actually blocked out.
  5. Buy the beer.

When the whistle blows, your schedule will be locked, your overflow will be routed to Saturday, and your phone will be quiet. Enjoy the game.
